La Leyenda del Río Daiya y el Origen de Nikko

The Legend of the Daiya River and the Origin of Nikko

According to tradition, 1200 years ago, the Buddhist monk Shōdō Shōnin, barely 30 years old, embarked on a journey in search of a secluded place in nature to develop his spiritual knowledge.

On his way, he encountered the Daiya River, whose strong current prevented him from advancing and crossing to the other side. Faced with this obstacle, the monk stopped to pray fervently to cross the river.

In response to his prayers, the god Jinjaou appeared, who threw two snakes, one green and one blue, onto the waters. These snakes intertwined to form a living bridge, allowing the priest to cross to the other bank safely.

Once Shōdō Shōnin was safely on the other side, the snakes disappeared, leaving behind an open path for the monk to establish what would later become the legendary religious and spiritual center of Nikko.Experience history firsthand with Modo Japón
